AIS- The new, international safety standart magnificantly increases
the safety on each trip. With this system, professional shipping or superfast
ferries can be recognized not only at the radar screen, but also with the
chart plotter or the PC -software.
What is the meaning of AIS?
AIS is the abbreviation for Automatic-Identification-System.
With AIS large ships identify themselves and they are able to transmit
data about their destination, travel speed, heading etc. via VHF.
How does it work?
The easyAIS & chartplotter (or. PC-Software) system is even better
- depending on the Plotter-manufacturer or PC-Software.Warning sectors
can be user-defined. If a ship in this sector is on collision course, an
alarm sounds.
How do I connect the AIS instrument?
The easyAIS receiver can be connected to your chart plotter or PC by
an external VHF antenna and the NMEA connection.
It is not possible to connect an AIS receiver directly to the VHF antenna,
because the VHF system transmits with up to 25W . This would destroy your
AIS receiver. But you can connect an AIS
Splitter to protect your AIS receiver. Alternativly you are able to
install a second VHF antenna in a minimum
distance of approx.to the transmitting antenna.
