Furuno Radar 1623

Radar

1623
Compact yachting radar instrument
with a lightweight and small antenna.
The follower of the popular
Furuno 1622.

13 areas 1/8 - 16 nm
with 2,2 kW transmitting power

The Furuno 1623 with its compact display and its small and lightweight Radom antenna is perfect for smaller yachts. Yet it has many functions, that are not even a standard feature in larger instruments.

Radar is helpful when sailing in fog - that´s common knowledge. But it also is the best coastal nav aid! Why? You can see the world around you with all the details (ships, buoys, shorelines etc.), also you can identify your position at once with the help of the bearing line and the range ring (or cursor).  So navigation will be visible and comprehensible in relation to the enviroment. With e.g. nav receivers, only datas are displayed. You only get a position together with a nav chart.

With multilingual language operation.
(german, english, french, spanish, portuguese, italian, danish).

- Antenna: Ø 38 cm, weight 4,6 kg
- Compact display
- High resolution 6" (15 cm) LCD display. Spray water proof, suitable for outside mounting in the cockpit or on the  Flybridge, for bracket- or bulkhead mounting
- Low power consumption
- Suitable as GPS slave unit
- Guard alarm in standby mode
- 13 measuring ranges, 1/8 to 16 nm
- Zoom and Display Shift

Radar functiones and navigation range
The Furuno 1623 displays 13 ranges from 1/8 to 16 nm. When you zoom in, the smallest range is 1/8 nm. For fast estimating of distances, range rings can be switched in. In the 6 nm area, the rings are arranged in distances of  2 nm around the centre. The selected radar range and the distances of the range rings are displayed on the upper left corner.

Bearing line and range ring.
With the 360° rotating electronic bearing line you can calculate the relative bearing of objects. The range ring accurately tells the distance to every object on the display. When both are used at the same time, an accurate positioning is possible. Relative bearing and distance are shown on the lower left or right corner on the display, the distance is indicated in nm or km.

Cursor.
The curser, shown as a cross on the dispay, calculates the distance to every object on the display. The data are also displayed on the lower corner of the display.

Echo Stretch.
Echoes from distant objects are often weaker than others on the display. The EchoStretch function enlarges the echoes in all areas.

Zoom

If you want to have a close view on a detail, you have to lay the cursor over the object and press ZOOM. Then the area is displayed twice as big.

Economy function.
The guard alarm, as it is described later, already is an  Economy function, to reduce current consumption. The Standby mode reduces the consumption to 8 Watt. The instrument then is in a " sleep mode", but when you press the TX key, it operates at once. When a matching GPS receiver with NMEA output (e.g. Furuno GP 32) is connected, in this time GPS data will be shown on the display.

GPS- and nav data.
NMEA 0183 data input for GPS-and instrument data. The data are shown on the lower radar picture or in the standby mode.
2, 3 or 4 data windows can be faded in. Possible data (matching sensors or instruments required): depth, position, course, datum, time, bearing and distance to waypoint, trip- and total miles, water temperature, rest of trip time, cross track error*, speed, wind angle, wind speed, waypoint data, graphical compass*, graphic steering aid*, graphic wind*, graphic speed* .
(*graphic display only in Standby mode)

Displayshift.

When you are sailing, the heading mostly is more important than the area behind the yacht. So with the  Displayshift - function it is possible, to shift the center 1/3 in the back, that means, the visible heading area on the display is enlarged by 1/3.

Echo Trail.
To watch the relative echo movement over a period of time, you can use an Echotrail function. You preset the time (30 sec, 1 min., 3 min., 6 min., continuously) and movements, e.g.of ships, will be visible with afterglows. Their brightness is adjustible in two steps.

Alarm and guard zone.
There is not always someone watching the display. That´s why the guard zone is important for safety. It can be user defined in range and direction, e.g. you can adjust an alarm ring in a distance of 3 nm or in an angle of 30 °. Every combination is possible. When echoes appear in the zone, an alarm will be heard.

Grey levels and negative display.
The Furuno 1623 monitor displays the echoes in four grey levels. To view the display in unfavourable light conditions, you can choose between positive- (Echoes dark, display bright) and negative display (Echoes bright, display dark).

Watchman.
After adjusting the alarm zone, the instrument can stay in a " sleep mode". It runs every  5, 10 or 20 minutes for one minute, announces alarm and stays in operation mode, when an echoe is viewed in the guard zone. If there are no objects, it again goes into "sleep mode". A useful function, when a permanent use is not needed; it saves power.

Sea clutter.
A heavy sea will make lots of echoes appear on the display, because the wave crests are partly reflected and shown. This appears more  close to your own position(centre), than further away. That´s why the Furuno 1623 sea clutter works progressive,i.e. it is weaker on the rim than in the centre. The Sea Clutter function can be adjusted automatically or manually in 100 steps.

Rain clutter

Deep rain clouds or heavy rain are shown on the display and make the recognization of other echoes difficult. With the rain clutter the display appears clear.

Crisp display, contrast, brightness and key illumination.
To have an optimum visibility, the contrast can be adjusted in 14, the brightness in 10 and the key illumination in 4 steps.

User friendly.
Primary and secondary functions. Some of the many Furuno 1623 functions have to accessible at once. These primary functions are activated directly from the keypad. Other, seldom used functions(e.g. once a trip), are activated with the menu keys or the sub menus. This makes the operation a lot easier. A more detailed description you find in: technical data.

Radom antenna.
The antenna is sealed and  works at windspeeds of up to  100 kn. It is small( 38 cm Ø) and lightweight /(4,6 kg ). This is very important, because the trim and stability are influenced by weights in the mast. On sailing yachts the antenna is usually mounted on the mast( a accessory mast bracket is available), or on the radar arch on motor yachts. The fine adjustment is done on the display (±30°).

Display.
Delivered with a bracket, can also be flush mounted in the bulkhead. Suitable for ouside mounting (Flybridge or Cockpit). The voltage supply works with either 12 V or 24 V.
